Department of Transport Infrastructure and Water Resources Engineering
Foundation in Budapest
The College of Transport and Telecommunications Engineering is established. Within its Faculty of Transport Engineering, the Departments of Road Construction, Railway Construction, Bridge Construction and Geotechnics are founded. Teaching initially takes place in Budapest.
First Graduates
The first road construction, railway construction and bridge construction engineers successfully complete their final examinations and graduate from the institution.
Relocation to Győr
The Faculty of Transport Engineering moves to Győr. A significant part of the academic staff is renewed, with numerous young and dynamic engineer-educators joining the existing team.
Expansion of Profile and Integrated Education
The educational structure gradually becomes more comprehensive: the three previously separate specialisations are replaced by a unified transport infrastructure engineering programme, followed later by comprehensive civil engineering degree programmes.
Introduction of New Programmes
In response to changing societal and market demands, new programmes addressing emerging needs are launched, including Urban Engineering and Environmental Engineering. At the same time, the departmental structure evolves flexibly alongside these developments.
Departmental Integration
The merger of the Road Construction and Railway Construction Departments, together with the integration of other related fields, leads to the establishment of the Department of Civil and Urban Engineering. The organisational name was later changed to the Department of Transport Infrastructure and Urban Engineering, which remained in use from 2001 to 2012.
Key Developments in Education
The Department has continuously played a leading role in the development and accreditation of innovative, internationally oriented educational programmes:
• 1994: Launch of the first German-language supplementary university programme.
• 2000: Accreditation of the five-year, single-cycle university Civil Engineering programme.
• 2009 / 2014: Launch of the Infrastructure Engineering MSc programme, followed by its English-language version.
Modern Name Changes and Focus on Water Engineering
In 2013, the Department was renamed the Department of Transport Infrastructure Engineering, and in 2018 it became the Department of Transport Infrastructure and Water Resources Engineering, reflecting the growing importance of water engineering and related research activities within the Department.

The core of the Department's current team consists of dedicated, home-grown academics, many of whom were born in the 1980s.

Comprehensive planning, maintenance, diagnostics and operation of roads and railway infrastructure.
Traffic Engineering & Safety
Road traffic engineering modelling and simulation, with a particular focus on network-level road safety analysis.
Sustainable Transport
Research and development of environmentally friendly micromobility alternatives and modern intelligent transport modes.
Water Management & Hydraulic Engineering
Design of modern hydraulic engineering structures, as well as statistical and numerical analysis of surface water management challenges.
