INTRODUCTION TO THE RESEARCH GROUP

The Road Safety Research Group (SZE-ROAD SAFETY) brings together research activities related to the safe design, operation and development of road infrastructure. Its main areas of focus include improving road safety, investigating interactions between the road environment and road users, and analysing the application of safety-supporting technologies in transport. The research group conducts its activities in close collaboration with the SZESIM Vehicle and Transportation Simulation Laboratory.

The research group’s areas of expertise include video-based road safety analysis using conflict analysis methods and surrogate measures of safety, the communication and interactions between automated vehicles and vulnerable road users – pedestrians and cyclists – as well as bicycle simulator research.

Another important area of research is the analysis of the effects of road design on drivers’ speed choice, as well as the evaluation of the road safety impacts of measures aimed at improving traffic safety, such as speed enforcement gantries and intelligent pedestrian crossings. The group also conducts eye-tracking studies investigating drivers’ information acquisition and attention processes while driving.

The research group aims to contribute to the development of safer transport systems through its scientific research and findings.

Key publications

Our bicycle simulator study demonstrates that safe cycling infrastructure remains crucial even in the presence of automated vehicles. Separating cycle lanes significantly improves cyclists’ perceived safety and comfort.
Our study demonstrates that a bicycle simulator can realistically model cyclists’ road user behaviour, making it an effective tool for designing safer transport infrastructure.
Our study shows that LED-based signals on automated vehicles can improve communication between pedestrians and vehicles, thereby enhancing road safety and pedestrian trust.
