Water Management Research Group
INTRODUCTION TO THE RESEARCH GROUP
The activities of the Water Management Research Group are based on three key research areas within sustainable water management.
The first research area is flood risk analysis, which focuses on the development of integrated flood protection and ecological planning methods, the reduction of flood exposure, and the modelling, analysis and optimisation of the behaviour of flood defences and hydraulic structures in the case of small and large watercourses, as well as uncharted catchments.
The second research area is integrated water resources management, which examines the coordinated management of surface and groundwater resources, the consideration of societal needs, the resolution of water resource management conflicts, and the development of methodologies to determine environmental water requirements.
The third research area focuses on water retention, the reduction of flash flood risk, and the integrated use of renewable energy sources. The research covers the development of energy storage systems based on rainwater retention, their hydrological and energy modelling, and the development of multi-objective optimisation methods. In addition, we investigate the water management and environmental impacts of nature-based solutions and small-scale blue-green infrastructure, and assess the life cycle, carbon footprint and economic impacts of water retention and rainwater utilisation solutions.

An assessment of the water management rehabilitation of the Szigetköz, and an analysis of the hydrological and water management impacts of the interventions.
To develop new technical guidelines for flood protection planning, taking into account safety, social, economic and environmental considerations in an integrated manner.
The application and further development of hydrological and hydrodynamic modelling methods for assessing the risk of flash floods in small watercourses.
Development of an integrated water management model for the Lake Velence catchment area to support the coordinated management of water resources, societal needs and conflicts over water use.
Development of a methodological proposal for determining the ecological water requirements of natural, heavily modified and artificial water bodies.
Development of innovative modelling methods and technical solutions for the coordinated use of stormwater management and renewable energy sources.
An examination of the environmental and economic impacts of nature-based solutions, small-scale blue-green infrastructure, and water retention and rainwater harvesting.
