Two faculty members from the Department of Transport Infrastructure and Water Resources Engineering at the University of Győr, Dr. Attila Borsos and Dr. Dániel Miletics, were invited for the second time to lecture at the international Road Safety Summer School organised by the University of Zagreb. The nine-day intensive programme, held from 24 August to 1 September 2026, provided more than thirty participants from around the world with theoretical and practical training in key areas of road safety.
The Road Safety Summer School, organised by the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences at the University of Zagreb, aims to introduce participants not only to contemporary theoretical approaches to road safety but also to practical methods. The 61-hour programme, worth 2 ECTS credits, covered the main factors influencing road safety – the human factor, the road and its environment, and the vehicle – and featured internationally recognised academics and practitioners.
The faculty members from Győr played a prominent role in the professional programme dedicated to Road Safety Management. In his lecture entitled “How to Measure Safety?”, Dr. Attila Borsos presented different approaches to measuring road safety. This was followed by his lecture “Basic Framework for Road Safety Audits & Inspection”, which introduced the fundamental methodological framework of road safety audits and inspections. In his presentation “First-Hand Experiences of Road Safety Audits”, Dr. Dániel Miletics drew on more than fifteen years of auditing experience and specific case studies to demonstrate the practical aspects of road safety audits.
The lectures were followed by a joint practical exercise. Working in small international groups, participants carried out a Road Safety Inspection jointly supervised by our two faculty members. Rather than conducting a conventional on-site inspection, the exercise was based on video recordings and background information provided to the participants, including site descriptions and crash data.

As a case study, participants examined a section of the Budapest–Balaton (BuBa) cycling route. The groups were tasked with identifying road safety problems, assessing the associated risks, and proposing measures that could reduce both the likelihood and expected severity of traffic crashes. Participants presented the results of their group work, after which the identified problems and proposed solutions were discussed and evaluated jointly.
The Hungarian case study also provided an opportunity for participants from different parts of the world to examine a real road safety situation in Hungary from a variety of professional and cultural perspectives. The exercise therefore not only supported the practical application of Road Safety Inspection methodology but also provided a valuable opportunity for international exchange of professional experience.
The renewed invitation and active participation of the two faculty members from Győr are closely aligned with our Department’s educational and professional activities related to the design of safer roads and further strengthen the international professional and academic connections of the University of Győr.
